The Research and Consultancy unit of Information Technology (IT) Department hosted a webinar entitled “Big data analytics using Spark”. The event was successfully conducted on February 23rd 2021, at 12.30 p.m. using the Google Meet platform. It was organized by the Research and Consultancy (R&C) Committee headed by the Chair, Dr. R. Venkateswaran with the guidance of Dr. Fatima Al-Shanfari, HOD, IT department. The event was planned for the teaching staff of all the departments in our university of Technology and Applied Sciences – Salalah with the support of our Dean Dr. Mohammed Rashid Al-Mamari and Assistant Dean –Academic Affairs- Dr. Nasser Salim Al-Kalbani.

The main objective of this webinar is to develop the research skills of the teachers specifically in the field of big data domain and related research opportunities.

The webinar formally started with Opening remarks by Dr. Mohammed Al-Mahri, Chair –Research and Consultancy Committee – University level and welcome address by Dr. R. Venkateswaran, Chair- R&C committee-IT followed by an introduction to the speaker by Mr. Muni Balaji T, Faculty-IT. Prof. Dr. Asadi Srinivasulu, Blue Crest University, Liberia unselfishly shared her expertise as the speaker of the said event. During the first part of the presentation, the speaker gave a concise yet clear discussion on the importance of big data and research areas in big data, big data challenges and its applications. . Further, the speaker presented the big data analysis using spark application and Scala programming at the end.

50 staff participated from different departments in the university in the said webinar. They will receive an e-certificate prepared by the HR Committee of the IT department.

All the participants were very grateful and showed deep appreciation to the R & C Committee for the initiative and the effort and to the speaker for her generosity in imparting her expertise and for the great and very interesting discussion. The feedback was good and participants were expected to conduct similar programs to support their research activities.

The session was concluded at 2.00 p.m.

The Research and Consultancy (R&C) committee of the English Language Center (ELC) spearheaded an informative webinar on Research Writing Proposals and The Research Council (TRC) Grant Schemes and Funding Criteria.

Dr. Aju Thomas, the R&C committee chairperson, organized and delivered a webinar, explaining in detail how to write research proposals and how to submit such proposals for TRC funding to around 40 participants last February 23, 2021.

The TRC under the umbrella of the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, envisions Oman to become a regional hub for innovation, and a leader in producing new ideas, products and services. The new administration of the University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS)–Salalah is raising the threshold and encourages staff in all departments to take these opportunities in research writing.

“We need to focus more on the research prospects in English Language Teaching (ELT),” Mr. Saeed Al-Mashiki, the Head of ELC, emphasized when he addressed the participants. He also urged them to work on different research areas related to ELT and motivated them to apply for TRC grants.

Dr. Mohammed Rashid Al Mamari, the new Dean of UTAS-Salalah joined the said webinar.

The Research and Consultancy Committee of the Business Studies Department has organized a session on “How to Write a Literature Review and Research Methodology”. The online session on MS Teams was held on February 23, 2021, at noon. The Resource Speaker of the session was Dr. Shelly Mohanty, Lecturer, Business Studies Department, UTAS-Salalah.  The session was part of the Research and Consultancy Committees’ series of workshops for senior project students of the Business Studies Department to provide them the relevant tools and knowledge to complete their project requirements. 

Dr. Shelly highlighted in the session the general structure of the Literature Review, its functions, procedures for reviewing the literature, and the ways to organize and present the Review. Moreover, she also discussed the methodologies of research, data collection, and data analysis techniques. 

The session was well attended by all Project students including their supervisors and also the members of the Research and Consultancy Committee. Additional sessions and workshops will still be held in the coming weeks to help the students prepare and complete their projects.

The English Language Center (ELC) honoured six lecturers and eight security guards in recognition of their valuable contributions to the Center in particular and to the University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS) - Salalah in general.

Held on February 23, 2021 in the Self-Access Center, the awards ceremony aimed at boosting higher staff morale apart from work productivity and efficiency.   Mr. Saeed Al-Mashiki, the Head of ELC, believed that it is vital to make the staff valued in the organization and offer them a sense of growth.

The first set of awardees were staff who served in the ELC Council as Head of the Section, Quality Assurance Coordinator, Level Coordinators, Afternoon Shift In-Charge, and Assistant Registrar:

Safety precautionary measures were strictly observed during the awards ceremony.

The Human Resource Department (HRD) Committee of Business Studies Department (BSD) has organized an exclusive webinar on “advising and handling probation related matters” on Tuesday, 16th February, 2021 for the staff members. The facilitators for the workshop were Dr Ramanadh Kasturi and Dr. Peeyush Dwivedi.

Dr. Ramandh Kasturi, was the facilitator for the session, “Essential Probation Guidelines required to handle probation students”. During the session, the facilitator explained the following: the essential aspects to consider a student as a probation student, inputs on Semester grade point average and its calculation, inputs on Cumulative grade point average and its calculation, reasons for the dismissal of students, scenario preparation for AP4 students, details related to handling listener student, inputs on prerequisites courses, suggestions to advisors in handling probation students. The session was lively and staff members had ample opportunity to clarify their doubts related to probation.

Dr. Peeyush Dwivedi, was the facilitator for the session, “Essential Advising Guidelines for advisors related to advising.”. He presented essential aspects related to the following: essentials of academic advising, curriculum followed at UTAS, advising rules for normal students, rules related to advising more courses to students, rules related to mixing level students, rules related to exit level students, advising rules for probation students, advising rules for students repeating courses, general advising rules, samples related to improper advising where degree audit is not followed, rules related to suspension of student, in addition to all a comprehensive information related to advising rules were discussed by the facilitator. The staff members were enthusiastic during the session to clarify their doubts related to advising.   

The Electrical Engineering Section, in coordination with the Staff Development Committee, conducted a webinar on January 31,2021  via Google Meet on current trends and scope of Renewable Energy. The resource person was Dr.M.A.Ansari, senior member of IEEE, PhD (IIT). He is a research coordinator in Gautham Buddha University, NCR Delhi India. Staff and students from Engineering Department attended the webinar.

A statistical and analytical based approach on Renewable energy and its application was discussed.  The resource person focused on Solar energy, Biogas production and the importance of Renewable energy in the Sultanate of Oman. 

This webinar enhanced the students’ knowledge and awareness about the alternative sources of energy that would be more beneficial and environment friendly for the present and future generations.

The Research and Consultancy Committee of Business Studies Department has organized a session on “How to Write a Research Article for Scopus Indexed Journal”. The online session on MS Teams was held on February 9,2021 at 12:00 pm. The Resource Speaker of the session was Dr. N. Sundaram, Professor of Commerce, School of Social Sciences and Languages, Vellore Institute of Technology, India.  The session was part of the staff development program to accomplish the staff needs on effective research and professional development requirements.   

Dr. Sundaram highlighted in the session the general structure of a research article and then discussed the steps and procedures on how to actually write a research article sharing some relevant and effective tips and guidelines. He concluded the session with an overview of Scopus Indexed Journal database. Scopus is one of the largest, most reputable abstract and citation databases for academic literature.

The session ended with an open forum where several staff members raised their queries and clarifications about the topic. All the participants expressed their gratitude to the organizers. The entire program was coordinated with the support of the Research and Consultancy Committee and the Business Studies Department of the University of Technology and Applied Sciences-Salalah.

The OJT Committee of Information Technology Department of UTAS-Salalah and PACA Salalah conducted a collaborative five days’ online workshops on “Basic Linux Administrator” from February 2nd to February 6th, 2021, 4 to 6 PM through MS Teams. The workshop aimed to provide basic understanding on the GNU/Linux operative system to the students. One of the renounced expert in Linux in the Civil Aviation Authority, Mr. Mohamed Suhail Musallem Gedad (Acting Director of Meteorological Department, was the speaker of the workshop. He demonstrated theories concepts as well as practical application of Linux Administrator. He covered the basics of Linux with example and syntax. The workshop was well participated by around 35 students of the department who have been wishing to learn Linux Administration concept. The workshop concluded in the 5th session with the collection of training feedback and e-certificate distribution.

The event was initiated by Industrial Link Committee of the university (UTAS). The arrangements were done by Dr. Ujjwal Agarwal (OJT Coordinator), with help of Mr. Bernard Ugalde (Chairman of SDC), Mr. Suresh Palarimath (Member of SDC), Mr.Syed Khaja Mohideen (Coordinator of E-Learning) and Mr Wasim Haidar SK (Member of OJT). The event was well hosted under the guidance of Dr. Fatima Al-Shanfari (Head of the Information Technology Department) with the support of college management.

Online Python Programming

The Information Technology section of the IT Department of UTAS-Salalah conducted online workshops in Python Programming last 26th of January and 2nd of February 2021 in response to the request and needs of the IT department for expertise in Python programming. The workshop aimed to prepare staff to teach Programming I and Programming II courses that were newly introduced in the IT curriculum. One of the renounced lecturers in programming in the university, Mr. Wasim Haidar SK, was the speaker of the workshop. He demonstrated practical applications of the programming theories and concepts using Python as the programming language. He covered the fundamentals of python programming, data types, variables, decision control structures, loops, and advanced topics on strings, lists, and tuples. Practical explanation and coding was done using Jupyter Notebook. The workshop was well participated by 41 staff of the department who have been wishing to learn Python programming. The workshop concluded in the second session with the collection of training feedback and eCertificate distribution.

The two-day workshop was led by Mr. Zahid Mahmood under the supervision of the head of the section, Dr. Mohammed Al Mahri, and the head of the department Dr. Fatma Al-Shanfari, in coordination with the HR Committee.

The Chemical Engineering Section of UTAS-Salalah organized two (2) webinars on “Chemical Engineer in Pharmaceutical Industry” and “Lucrative and Evergreen Chemical Engineer.”

The first webinar was presented in January by Mr. Balaji Sagadevan, Principal Engineer, in Alnylam Pharmaceutical Boston, USA. The webinar focused on the importance of chemical engineers throughout the research and development (R&D) to full-scale manufacturing and packaging. The speaker also emphasized the current challenges for chemical engineers to shape the future of the pharmaceutical industries.

The importance of chemical engineers in the development and manufacture of pharmaceutical products was given importance during the webinar. Chemical engineering graduates from the UTAS can work in different roles as they are needed at different stages and processes like research and development, product development, quality control, and manufacturing and production engineering.

Dr. R. Baskaran, Professor and Head of Chemical Engineering at St Joseph's College of Engineering, India, held another webinar on February 2, 2021. The speaker traced back from the industrial revolution using steam power to modern industrialization in the 19th and 20th century leading to rapid developments of automation and robotics.

As a chemical engineer, he also promoted working together to find solutions for sustainable growth, as green chemical engineering is the frontier for addressing the global challenges in resources, energy, and environment. He also emphasized the “Internet of Things” as the technology trends, therefore the chemical engineering graduates must know about intelligent systems that provide the backbone of the chemical processing technology.
