Linking from Staff Appraisal results in the IT Department, the Database Section chaired by Mr. G. Baskar, in coordination with the HR Committee, has organized and conducted another training where the staff learns new programming skills using ASP.Net. The training was conducted on 21st of January 2020 and facilitated by Dr. Chandapal M., a lecturer from the Database Section. The participants learned how and where to download MS Visual Studio, design pages, form items with functionalities, and run in a browser.

ASP.Net is a set of web development tools developed by Microsoft which allows programmers to build dynamic web sites, applications, and services. All the participants were enthusiastic about learning the said programming language which will be imparted to the IT students in developing their course projects.

SCT- Oman Math Day Celebration

Mathematics plays a very important role in the modern world. We are living in a scientific era of rapid development. So, the Mathematics that we teach in the classroom should cater to the needs of every individual. Keeping this in mind, this workshop has been arranged to share and gain knowledge in the teaching and learning process in mathematics and mathematical techniques for the development and progress of students of Oman.

The Math Section of the IT Department organized the Oman Math Day Celebration on 26th November & 3rd December 2019 with a Knowledge Sharing Workshop on Mathematics in the Math Forum gathering held at CGC Lab from 12 Noon to 2 PM.

Title: Sharing Experiences and Current Practices in Teaching and Student Assessment

Speakers and Topics Covered:

Dr. Mallika Natarajan, HOS of Math section discussed the Approaches and Strategies in Mathematics Teaching and Learning which includes classroom management, teaching with technology, increase learner engagement, and creating effective learning assessments.

Dr. Akhilesh Kumar Mishra presented the usage of GeoGebra software in teaching math courses and Mr. Brahma Dutta Pandey discussed the usage of Latex in preparing the students assessments and handouts.

Mr. P. Suresh Kumar discussed the online assessments specifically on creating calculated questions’ through Moodle.

Mr. Nookaraju Amarnath shared his way of teaching in class to motivate the students and Mrs. Asra Anjum shared her thoughts on motivation.

 Mrs. Shradha Dwivedi shared her experience in blended learning teaching in the previous college where she worked before.

Overall, the workshop was very successful and appreciated by all the participants. All staff from the Math Section are very thankful for all the support and guidance received from our Head of Department, Dr. Fatima Al Shanfari.

The Information Technology (IT) Department hosted a webinar entitled “Compiling the Research Article into an International standard format using TexStudio Tool”. The event was successfully conducted on June 15, 2020, at 10:30 a.m. using the Google Meet platform. It was organized by the Research and Consultancy (R&C) Committee headed by the Chair, Dr. R. Venkateswaran with the guidance of Dr. Fatima Al-Shanfari, HOD, IT department. The event was intended for the teaching staff across all the departments in the college. 

The main objective of this webinar is to develop the research skills of the teachers specifically on how to prepare and compile a research article in an international standard format using the latest tool. 

The webinar formally started with welcome remarks followed by an introduction to the speaker by Dr. R. Venkateswaran. Mrs. Shradha Dwivedi, a Math lecturer of the IT department, unselfishly shared her expertise as the speaker of the said event. During the first part of the presentation, the speaker gave a concise yet clear discussion on the importance of Research, article preparation, format, and contents of the research paper. Further, the speaker presented the importance and use of the TexStudio tool. In the second part of the presentation, the speaker enthusiastically gave the actual practical demonstration on how to apply or use the said tool in preparing a research article based on international format.

A total of 58 staff participated in the webinar. They were given a copy of the complete handouts and will soon receive an e-certificate prepared by the HR Committee of the IT department.

All the participants were very grateful and showed deep appreciation to the R & C Committee for the initiative and the effort and to the speaker for her generosity in imparting her expertise and for the great and very interesting discussion. 

The session concluded at 11:45 a.m. 

The R & C Committee would like to thank the college management and the IT Department for the continuous support in all their research development activities.

For the IT Department, the new academic year started with a seminar-training entitled “Improving Test Construction using Bloom's Taxonomy and Table of Specifications” on Tuesday, 8th of October 2019. The training was organized by the IT Section, headed by Mr. Zahid Mehmood, the HR Committee-IT, and facilitated by Ms. Jasmin Tumulak-Estudillo, an experienced lecturer from IT Section and chair of Standard 2 in OAAA of the college.

The training aimed to enhance the skills of the staff on how to write test questions effectively following the revised Bloom’s Taxonomy, Table of Specifications (TOS), and course outcomes. The attendees answered an activity to revisit knowledge in Bloom’s cognitive levels and devised new ways to identify the correct cognitive level specific to the areas of their specialization. Proper utilization of TOS template according to the requirements of the course was also emphasized. The facilitator gladly discussed thoroughly the main points of the topic and answered the queries from the active participants. At the end of the program, Dr. Fatima Al-Shanfari, Head of IT Department, awarded a certificate of appreciation to Ms. Jasmin.

Skills Enchancement for Project Students

The Database section of the Information Technology Department conducted a workshop on “Skills Enhancement for Project Students” on 21st January 2020. This workshop is aimed at imparting and re-enforcing students’ skills on project proposal, project management, database design and modeling. Under the leadership of Mr. G. Baskar, HOS, Database section, the following lecturers: Mr. Muhammed Azeem Qureshi, Mr. Kashif Majeed Sha, Mr. Mohammed Ateeq and Mr. Mohammed Arshad Ali conducted the workshop. All Course Project students under the Bachelor and Advanced Diploma programs attended and gained the required knowledge and skills.

A pool of staff members from Higher College of Technology (HCT) headed by Dr. Huda Salim Al Shuaily, Head of IT Department, visited the Salalah College of Technology (SCT) on December 12, 2019. The purpose of the visit mainly is to monitor all the B. Tech level specializations offered in the IT Department and to make an analysis of the proposals to offer new specializations namely: Information Security (ISec) Specialization in B. Tech level and Software Engineering (SE) Specialization in Advance Diploma level.

The IT Department warmly welcomed the HCT team in the IT building led by Dr. Fatima Al-Shanfari, Head of IT Department with the presence of the respective Head of Sections (HOSs)and Specializations, Mr. G. Baskar, HOS-Database, Mr. Jonathan Peter Glycer Tambaoan, HOS-NIES, Dr. Abhishek Dubey, HOS-Information Systems, and Mr. Zahid Mehmood, HOS-Information Technology. After the formal introduction, the team went to some of the final examination rooms to get feedback from the students.

Afterwards, all proceeded to the BSIT building. A brief deliberation transpired at the staff common room regarding the B. Tech level specializations and the existing resources of the department. Then, the core of the visit immediately followed. The team divided themselves into four groups with the corresponding HOS assigned to assist for the actual and comprehensive inspection for each specialization. The group composition is as follows:

During the inspection, the team member for each group thoroughly reviewed the course delivery and assessment plans of all B. Tech level courses through explicit dialogue with the respective HOS. Moreover, the course coordinator for each course was interviewed to provide further relevant details on the courses.

Overall, the visit resulted in productive information sharing between HCT and SCT to have a common course delivery and assessment in all specializations of the IT Department. Moreover, it was a great venue to improve and update the current practices on both sides to better achieve the course outcomes.

The IT Department is hopeful that a visit report will be sent by the team with the strong optimism on the approval to offer both Information Security (ISec) Specialization in B. Tech level and Software Engineering (SE) Specialization in Advance Diploma level since the department has met the minimum requirements on student strengths and resources availability in particular.

The IT Department expresses its gratitude to the HCT team for the fruitful experience and constructive feedback. Moreover, the department would like to acknowledge the college management for their constant support and arrangement for the team’s visit, and the ETC for the technical support. Above all, heartfelt thanks to all the HOSs and section staff members for their hard work, unwavering support and cooperation.

Students from IT and Database sections of Information Technology (IT) Department had a visit at Public Authority for Civil Aviation (PACA) on 11th November 2019 from 10:00-1:30 p.m. It was organized by the On Job Training (OJT) and Industrial Link Committee chaired by Dr. Ujjwal Agarwal, OJT members: Mr. Wasim Haidar and Mr. Mohammed Atheeq with the support of Mr. Zahid Mahmood, Head of IT section and Mr. G. Baskar, Head of Database section.

Students were very grateful of the experience joined by the two lecturers of the department, Mr. Hansel Delos and Mr. Muni Balaji. During the said visit, Mr. Mohammed Suhail Musallem Gedad, Head of Maintenance Section of Meteorological Devices, PACA welcomed the students. He explained the different processes and working procedures of metrological department in PACA. After, Mr. Abdullah Said Salim Alansi, explained briefly the real execution of Database and Networking structures and also showed the Server room of the IT department. The students then went inside the Metrological Department and Airport tower to see the actual operation. Moreover, Mr. Abdullah Alansi shared his knowledge to the students about the work culture and his practical experience.

This industrial visit gives a real time and practical exposure to IT students, which help them understand the concepts and applications of Database and IT software in the industry.

As a part of the “ICPC 2019” (International Collegiate Programming Contest), the “OCPC -2019” (Oman Collegiate Programming Contest) was held on 13th and 14th October, 2019 at Grand Hall, Sultan Qaboos University in Muscat. A total of 152 students (36 teams) from 23 universities participated in this prestigious two-day competition. On behalf of Salalah College of Technology (SCT), three students namely: Mr. Tamam Rajab Said Bait Brakah, Mr. Abdul Rahman Naif Mohammed Al Yafii, and Mr. Said Mahad Suhail Al-Maashani from Information Technology Department participated as members of the SCT-IT team.

The first day of the event started with inductions, trainings, 4 hours practice session, and an excursion to Opera House, Muscat. The second day of the event started with the 5 hours core contest and ended with the valedictory ceremony. SCT-IT team acquired great experience and training to develop their programming skills prime for the IT industry jobs. The sponsor of the event assured the student participants would get job opportunities by attending the interviews that will be conducted in the future.

The team supervisor was Dr. Wilfred Blessing N.R, Lecturer of the Information Systems (IS) section. He was selected also as Board Member of the OCPC. Mr. Suresh Kumar P., Lecturer of the Math section was the team’s special trainer whom trained the students in problem solving, logical thinking and reasoning prior to the competition. The participants thank the coaches for the necessary training and support. They also extend their gratitude to Dr. Anwar Al Ismaili, College Dean, Dr. Fatima Al-Shanfari, Head of IT Department, and Dr. Abhishek Dubey, Head of IS Section for the motivation, support and facilities.

The Information Technology department headed by Dr. Fatima Al-Shanfari, conducted an awareness program regarding “Research, Innovation and Consultancy Activities” for the academic year 2019-2020. The awareness program was conducted during the department staff meeting held on September 24, 2019 at 12:00 noon in IT- 12C (IT Bldg.).

During the meeting, Dr. Fatima Al-Shanfari emphasized the importance of innovative projects and research activities. Dr. R. Venkateswaran, Chair of Research and Consultancy Committee & TRC Academic Focal Point, delivered the presentation during the program. He discussed about the importance of research activities, innovative projects, R & C forms and procedures, and consultancy work activities in the department.

Moreover, Dr. Venkateswaran informed and motivated the staff to participate as well in the Research Council’s (TRC) ongoing innovative project competitions and conferences. Also, he shared the opportunities of utilizing the Turnitin and ProQuest Portal for research and project activities.

The Database Section of the Information Technology Department organized a workshop on “Skills Enhancement for Project Students” on 24th September 2019. This workshop aimed in imparting and re-enforcing the skills in project proposal, database design and modeling, and project management, in the minds of students who are doing Course Project this semester. The event was successfully conducted under the leadership of Mr. G. Baskar, HOS, Database section and active involvement of Mr. Muhammed Azeem Qureshi, Mr. Kashif Majeed Sha, Mr. Mohammed Atheeq and Dr. Chandrapaul M. as resource speakers. All students of Bachelor program, who are currently involved in the course project documentation, attended and gained the knowledge and skills necessary in the conduct of their project.
