Research and Consultancy Committee of Information Technology department has conducted one day Research Awareness Program on 13-11-2018 (12.30pm to 2.00pm) for the SCT staff. The title of the program was “Where to Present and Publish”. The speaker was Dr. Wilfred Blessing N.R, Chairman of Projects Committee, IT department.

The session started with a welcome speech by Dr. Fatima Al-Shanfari, the Chairman of Research & Consultancy Committee - IT department. She welcomed all the participants, introduced the speaker and briefed the objective of the research awareness program.

The speaker Dr. Wilfred Blessing N.R focused on three core areas including how to choose a quality conference, how to identify suitable journals for publication and how to face predatory publishers. He has also explained about various researcher ID’s and citation benefits. The techniques to download research papers from quality Open Access journals were useful. The overall flow of the program was to motivate the participants to transform a research idea into a project and then a product. At the end, the speaker had provided the awareness about the “Ministry of Manpower – Innovation Award” and “OCCI Innovation Award by TRC (The Research Council)” and motivated to participate in the innovative project competitions. The session was fully packed with practical demonstrations and related video presentations.

Finally, Mr. Viji Paul, Head of the IT department acknowledged the speaker and handover the certificate of appreciation. The HOD also thanked R&C committee and chairman for initiating this program. He also greeted the speaker, participants and all the committees involved in arranging this program. The participants from various departments recognized the worth of this event through their positive feedbacks.


IT Students of SCT to represent Team Oman for the Huawei ICT Competition in China Featured

To China we go! The Salalah College of Technology (SCT) community proudly congratulates MONTHER HASSAN SALEM MUSHEK and YOUSUF AHMED MOHAMMED SABAH AL RAWAS, BTech Networking students who made it to the top 6 out of more than 800 students across the sultanate of the recently concluded Huawei ICT National Competition Middle East 2018 held at Higher College of Technology in Muscat last November 7, 2018. Both will join the Team Oman which is composed of 6 students from the Sultanate to compete with the rest of the world!

Huawei as one of the leading global ICT solutions provider sponsored, launched and designed the said ICT competition in partnership with the Ministry of Manpower and Higher College of Technology (HCT). This aims to promote ICT industry technology certifications, builds a strong ICT ecosystem and mold competitive, innovative and creative ICT industry talents geared to be future leaders.

Five IT students from SCT registered for the competition last May, 2018. This was followed by a preliminary round on October 2, 2018. It was an online exam using the educational platform of Huawei accessed simultaneously by 800 students from various universities and colleges across the Sultanate. Two SCT students qualified on the said elimination and underwent for 2 days training at HCT from October 17-18, 2018 in preparation for the national finals on November 7, 2018. During the national competition, the top skilled participants will be selected to represent Team Oman to compete in the prestigious regional competition on November 22-27 in Shenzhen, China.

This big achievement received is a byproduct of the collaborative efforts most especially to Mr. Devarajan Veerasamy and Mr. Bernard Ugalde and the rest of the coaches Mr. Sunil Thomas and Mr. Yashir Ambula for their hardship and dedication in preparing and conducting rigid trainings to the participants.

Congratulations to everyone who in one way or another molded competitive and world class students! The journey of the team’s success was not a straight forward glory but full of struggles and challenges which have been surpassed with the strong leadership and guidance of Mr. Viji Paul, HOD-IT and Mr. Jonathan Peter Glycer Tambaoan, HOS-Networking and Internet and E-Security (NIES) section.

A Seminar on "Where to Present and Publish?" Featured

All staff are invited and welcome to join the seminar on "Where to Present and Publish?" organized by the Research and Consultancy Committee of IT Department chaired by Dr. Fatima Al-Shanfari. This seminar aims to strengthen research outputs of staff and share insights primarily on the following topics and more:

  • Which conferences to present in and which Journals to send work for publication?
  • What are the traits of quality conferences and journals?
  • How to avoid non-authentic conferences and journals?

The seminar will be conducted on 13th of November, 2018 at Multi-Purpose Hall (MPH) from 12:45 till 2:00 pm to be graced by Dr. Wilfred Blessing N.R, lecturer from IS section of IT Department as the Resource Speaker.

The said seminar is just one of the strategies of the Research and Consultancy Committee to be able to extend and deliver the primary points in research consultancy for the college staff and update them with the steps to consider when publishing a paper in a journal or when presenting in a research conference considering that nowadays, it is very important to identify the credible and trustworthy conference and journal.


Inauguration Ceremony of the New Network Laboratory of the IT Department Featured

It is the aim of the college to produce well-equipped graduates that meet the varying demands of the industries. Thus, it ensures that the facilities are state-of-the-art and updated to expose students in a real-world and practical experience while learning. To pursue this, the college has taken a bigger step to seek for initiatives by establishing a partnership with SEMBCORP Salalah. SEMBCORP Salalah is a power and water company who developed, financed, built, owns and operates the Salalah independent water and power plant in Oman. SEMBCORP funded the upgrading of the Network laboratory of the Networking and Internet and E-Security (NIES) section of the IT department the following: CISCO Lab bundle, computers, server, laptop and printer. This was successfully inaugurated on November 4, 2018 at IT Bldg.

The inauguration formally opened and anchored by Mr. Jonathan Peter Glycer Tambaoan, the HOS-NIES section. This was followed by welcome remarks by Mr. Viji Paul, HOD-IT department who cited that he is positive that these new resources would serve as additional tools in the implementation of a more advanced curriculum and program through course projects, practical exercises and hands on applications.

The College Dean, Dr. Hamdan Al-Manthari, expressed his gratitude for the partnership and the generosity of SEMBCORP and is looking forward for continuity of this endeavor for the mutual benefits of both.

As part of SEMBCORP’s social responsibility, the CEO of SEMBCORP Salalah Mr. Alex Miquel, shared the vision of the company to contribute to the enrichment of the workforce by working together with academes in preparing marketable and industry ready graduates.

A memento was presented by the college Dean to SEMBCORP Salalah and was accepted by the CEO.

Best projects and winners of national competitions were presented by students during the inauguration. Ms. Ghalyah Qahtan Said Khuwar and Ms. Tafool Mohammed Mohad Al-Mashani shared their BTech Networking Course Project entitled:” IOT Based Automated Climate Control for Plant Growth”. Ms. Fatima Abdul Rasheed Moosa Al Balushi, the silver medalist in the Oman Skills: Graphics Design Competition showcased her piece. Ms. Fatma Al-Mashani presented the “Smart Trash Bin Collection and Monitoring System” who won Gold Prize for Environment Domain and Silver Prize for Smart City Category during the IoT Olympics 2018.

An appreciation speech was given by Mr. Majeed Bassem Awadh Bait Al-Zain, a BTECH Networking specialization student.

The event was culminated with a symbolic ribbon cutting led by the college Dean and the CEO of SEMBCORP Salalah. Mr. Mohammed Ahmed Mohammed Basaddiq, a networking student demonstrated the use of the networking equipment to all the guests together with the other networking students Mr. Ahmed Aqeel Alawi Moqabeel, and Mr. Khalid Ali Salim Mohammed Al-Shanfary.

The inauguration was graced also by the College Council, staff and students of IT department and Mr. Salim Mohammed Al Mashikhi, HR and Admin Manager of SEMBCORP Salalah.

Warm congratulations to the great effort and teamwork of the people behind the success of this big event most especially to the members of the NIES section, Mr. Chithik Raja. M, Dr. Mohammed Musallam Bakhit Al Mahri, Dr. Nitesh Nandkumar, Mr. Steven Vinil Kumar M., Dr. Venkateswaran. R, Mr. Ayaz Mohiuddin, Mr. Devarajan Veerasamy, Mr. Mohammed Ashik, Mr. Sunil Thomas, Mr. Yashir Ambula with the active leadership of Mr. Jonathan Peter Glycer Tambaoan and full support of Mr. Viji Paul.
