Another spectacular and significant occasion was witnessed and celebrated by the Information Technology (IT) department as it commemorates its annual IT day celebration. Last March 13-14, 2019, the department successfully hosted this year’s IT Festival with the theme “Technology: A Tool for National and Social Development.” The festival aimed to foster camaraderie and fellowship among the members of the SCT-IT community and to showcase student skills and talents.

The first day marked the formal opening of the festival. The participants and guests were warmly welcomed by Dr. Fatma Al Shanfari, the Head of the IT department, and Dr. Said Al-Mashikhi, the Assistant Dean of the Academic Affairs.

Three keynote speakers graced the event. First among them was Mr. Mohammed Al Hashmi from Salalah Methanol who talked about empowering Omani youths. He said that becoming a leader starts with self-awareness and it is only by then that one can start contributing to society. He then pointed out the needed skills in 2020 and the skills distribution across countries and industries. Finally, he presented the Omanis vision in 2040 and how the youth sector can contribute in achieving this.

Mr. Mohamed Suhail Musallem Gedad was the second keynote speaker from the Public Authority for Civil Aviation (PACA). He discussed topics related to Free and Open-Source Software (FOSS) and FOSS initiatives in the Dhofar region and across the country.

Mr. Abdullah Said Salim Alansi, the founder of Google Development Group (GDG) in Salalah and an alumnus of the department was the third keynote speaker. He presented their advocacies and projects together with the importance of Internet of Things (IoT) in people’s daily lives.

On the other hand, Mr. Qais Khalid Mohammed Al Hindi, an alumnus of the college, encouraged students to stand up, be bold and make a difference with his strong message to the IT students “If I can then you can.”

One of the highlights during the opening day was the giving of recognition by the department to student participants in the Oman Skills Competition 2018 namely: Mr. Ahmed Salim Nassr Mohammed Al Alawi who won first place and Fatima Abdul Rasheed Moosa Al Balushi, as the second placer. The two winners are set to compete in Kuwait and Russia this year. Mr. Munther Al-Mashikhi and Mr. Yousuf Ahmed Mohammed Sabah Al Rawas were also recognized being the participants of the Huawei ICT Competition held in China last year.

Moreover, selected students presented their course projects relating to areas of banking, transportation, IOT, tourism and commerce sectors during the event. Specialization booths were also setup that generated awareness and highlighted the purpose and goals of each specialization in the department through student projects, activities, and mini fun games facilitated by the students themselves.

The second day of the festival started with the skills competition in nine different areas held simultaneously in the different computer laboratories of the department. The following are:

6. Programming Competition
7. Database Design Competition

9. Problem-Solving in Math

On the same day, the Pi Day celebration was also celebrated which aimed to rekindle the spirit of mathematics among the students and the Omani youths. It was spearheaded by the Math section with math puzzles, online quizzes, role playing, presentations, and some games like math model making competition and Pascal’s triangle using paper cups, Sudoku, and magic square.

The festival concluded with the awarding of student achievers and skills competition winners. Both Networking and Internet E-Security and Database sections received the Best Booth Award for their outstanding booths. The latter, got the People’s Choice Award as well for having the highest number of votes in the online voting system.

Students’ talent in poetry and singing were also showcased in the different intermission numbers during the two days program.

The 2 day event was organized by the IT Club, headed by Mr. Rashad Ashoor Hajra Bait Faraj Alla with their supervisors Mr. Bernard Ugalde, Mr. Devarajan Veerasamy, and Mr. Suresh Palarimath through the cooperation of the different sections and committees in the department.

The festival became more significant and colorful through the generosity and heartwarming support of the following sponsors: Salalah Methanol, Sweets of Oman, Coca-cola Oman, American Speciality Clinics, Shanfari Group of Companies, and Dhofar Cattle Feed.

The event was well participated by students and with overwhelming support both the college management and staff.
