GFP Induction Program for Semester 2, Academic Year 2018-19 conducted

More than 200 new intake students were welcomed by the English Language Center (ELC) through its In-house Induction Program on 31st of January 2019. The said program was coordinated by Mr. Randy Magdaluyo (Level 1 & Student Induction Committee Coordinator) and presented by Induction Committee members: Ms. Samha Al Mas’hali and Ms. Amal Al-Awadi (Level Representatives), Mr. Khalid Al-Ghafri (Student Grievances Coordinator), Mr. Rajesh Menon (GFP-Math Coordinator) and Mr. T. Karthikeyan (GFP- IT Coordinator).

The program started with a discussion of the SCT motto, vision, mission and values by Ms. Amal Al-Awadi. She explained clearly all details about the college statements and its graduate attributes. Translated handouts were also distributed to students.

The English skills, curricula, e-learning resources and assessment plan were presented thoroughly by Ms. Samha Al Mas’hali. A short speech in Arabic by an excellent level 4 student, Fatima Haidar Rasheed Al Zain, also helped students understand all these language learning requirements and resources as she shared her own experiences studying English.

Mr. Khalid Al-Ghafri also discussed completely the important rules in classroom activities, examinations, absences, warnings and academic behaviors in the campus. It was followed by the last session on the basic placement test, assessment plan, attendance policies and common rules for Math and IT by Mr. T. Karthikeyan and Mr. Rajesh Menon. All sessions were delivered through a Power Point presentation.

The activity culminated with students giving feedback on the college vision-mission-values statement and general rules, and student induction program.

Orientation: GFP Placement Tests for Semester 2 new intake students.

The English Language Center - General Foundation Program (ELC-GFP) conducted an orientation program on GFP Placement Tests for new students. The orientation was held in the Self-Access Center on the 6th of January 2019 with 325 student attendees. The orientation was conducted in two sessions 8:00- 9:00 and 9:30:10:30with a thirty- minute break in between.

During the orientation, copies of the induction week schedule were distributed to all attendees. Mr. Saeed Al Mashiki, Head – English language Center, welcomed the new intake students and he introduced briefly some rules and requirements of the ELC-GFP.

The SCT vision, mission and values (VMV) as well as the ELC administration were explained fully by Ms. Amal Al-Awadi. Online Placement tests rules, schedules and cut-off scores of the placement test for English were explained clearly by Ms. Samha Al Mas’hali. Mr. T. Karthikeyan and Mr. Rajesh Menon also discussed the online placement test, assessment plan, attendance policies and common rules for Math and IT. All sessions were delivered through a Power Point presentation.

The online registration dates were also announced. At the end of the sessions, the new students were encouraged to attend the college- level induction program in Multi-Purpose Hall which was scheduled at 10:30 am on the same day.

L3, L4 students attend Dental Hygiene Awareness Program

Levels 3 and 4 students of the English Language Center attended the Dental Hygiene Awareness Program on November 15, 2018 in the Self Access Center.

The dental health team consisting of two lady doctors – a dentist and a dental hygienist from Sultan Qaboos Hospital-Salalah, shared their knowledge to the students the proper ways in taking care of infected, crooked, missing teeth or misshapen jaw and other precautions to be taken with dental issues.

During the interactive session, the doctors clarified the doubts raised by the attendees. The speakers emphasized further the importance of practicing good dental hygiene as a key factor for a person’s appearance, confidence, and quality of life.

After the session, Mr. Saeed Al Mashiki, the Head of the Center, along with Mr. Kurian Augusthy, the Chairperson of ELC Health and Safety Committee, gave certificates of appreciation and mementos to the two lady dentists.

ELC celebrates 48th National Day

Oman’s 48th National Day was celebrated with glee by the ELC staff on the 19th of November 2018 in the Self-Access Center.

Having lived and worked in Oman for more than 20 years, some teachers shared their wonderful memories in the Sultanate, particularly in Salalah. They likewise expressed their gratitude to the Omani people for their warmth, kindness, and generosity.

Culminating the celebration was a fellowship lunch courtesy by the Omani staff. Mr. Salim Al Maashani and Mr. Shoiab Al-Balushi organized the said event.

Kahoot! competition for L3, L4 conducted

Kahoot, a game-based technological learning activity, was conducted as a competition for Levels 3 and 4 students in the English Language Center.

On the 12th of November 2018, five students in Level 3 competed in Kahoot! Questions were related to many topics covered in their daily class. At first, the boys seemed to be winning but the girls took the lead in the end. Excitement overwhelmed the contestants when they clicked as fast as they could the button in order to arrive at the correct answer. Ahmed Hasan Musallam Kashoob, Asma Abdullah Said Ateeq and Manoa Mohammed Ali Al Mashani emerged as first, second, and third placers respectively.

Meanwhile, the Kahoot! competition for Level 4 was held on the 29th of November 2018. A 20- multiple choice quiz was answered on individual computers thru a web browser. The questions were based on the concepts and vocabulary covered in Level 4. As the contest progressed, it was interesting to note that two girls outsmarted the boys in terms of accuracy and speed. Fatima Ahmed Salim Masan and Noor Mohammed Fadhil Ba Omar bagged the first and second prizes, respectively.

A fun-filled experience, the Kahoot! competition challenged the students the mental ability and enhanced their reading skills. Its successful conduct was made possible through the collaborative efforts of ELF committee composed of Mr. Salim Al-Maashani, Rekha Siby, and Ms. Gail Ann Maria Macgowan.

ELC awards students in co-curricular activities

The English Language Center (ELC) conducted an award ceremony on the 5th of December 2018 for the students who actively participated in all the co-curricular activities organized by the English Language Forum (ELF) for the first semester of academic year 2018-2019.

Held in the ELC on separate dates, the contested events were painting/drawing with 17 student participants and Kahoot! with five competitors from Level 3 and ten for Level 4. Cheers of teachers and students echoed in the Self-Access Center when Mr. Saeed Al-Mashiki, the Head of the ELC, awarded all the winners and participants with certificates of appreciation. Three students were also given certificates for participating in the college-wide celebration of the 48th National Day in the Multi-purpose Hall.

Towards the end of the award ceremony, Mr. Salim Al-Maashani, the ELF Chairperson, expressed his gratitude to the ELC administration, ELF team, the teachers, and the students for their constant support.

ELF exhibits student artwork for National Day

Depicting Oman’s 48 years of glory, the paintings and drawings of ELC students were exhibited by the English Language Forum (ELF) during the college-wide celebration of the National day on the 27th of November 2018 at the Multi-purpose Hall.

Visitors of the English Language Center (ELC) booth gave positive feedback with the artwork of students affirming that the exhibit was a great avenue to develop students’ creativity.

The ELC booth also showcased the Sultanate’s metamorphosis for 48 years by portraying Oman as one nation, one people, and one vision with His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said as the leader, the builder, and the paragon.

Another highlights of the ELC booth included Oman’s most beautiful landmarks, famous people, traditional food, widely used languages, and the locals’ sources of livelihood.

Mr. Salim Al-Maashani, the ELF Chairperson, also introduced an application program called Kahoot! to the guest of honor Dr. Saleh Masan, Shura Council Member and to Dr. Hamdan Al Manthari, College Dean.

The ELF team that managed the booth and exhibit was composed of Mr. Salim Al-Maashani, Ms. Wendella Francis, Ms. Rekha Siby, and Dr. Claire Orpilla through the support of Mr. Saeed Al-Mashiki, the Head of the Center.

ELF conducts art competition

Aimed at providing a platform for SCT students display their creative and artistic abilities, an art completion was conducted by the English Language Forum (ELF) last November 8, 2018 in the Self-Access Center.

Five male and twelve female budding artists showcased their skills on the theme “Oman 48 years of glory”. Drawing and coloring for one hour allowed students to uncover their natural talents in sketching and illustrations.

The winners were awarded with prizes and certificates. The judges were Mr. Edward Stallard and Mr. Michael Pendry. The winners of the art competition were:

Mr. Salim Al-Mashani, the ELF Chairperson, believed that taking part in the art competition had helped the students develop the right attitude towards a career as an artist. He also mentioned that students can be challenged to move out of their comfort zones in face of a contest like that.

He thanked Mr. Saeed Al-Mashiki, HELC, for his support and all ELF members Ms. Rekha Siby, Ms. Gail Ann Maria Macgowan, Ms. Wendella Francis, and Dr. Claire Orpilla for organizing this event.

The said program was coordinated by Mr. Randy Magdaluyo (Level 1 Coordinator) and presented by Induction Committee members: Ms. Samha Al Mas’hali and Ms. Amal Al-Awadi (Level 1 Representatives), Mr. Khalid Al-Ghafri (Student Grievances Coordinator), Mr. Rajesh Menon (GFP-Math Coordinator) and Mr. T. Karthikeyan (GFP- IT Coordinator).

The program started with words of welcome from Ms. Noor Kashoob, HoS-English Language Programs. She introduced briefly some information about the program.

Online English Placement Test orientation program conducted

The English Language Center - General Foundation Program (ELC-GFP) conducted an orientation program on GFP Placement Tests for new students. The orientation was held in the Self-Access Center on the 6th of September 2018 with 356 student attendees. The orientation was conducted in two sessions 8:00- 10:30 with a thirty- minute break in between.

During the orientation, copies of the induction week schedule were distributed to all attendees. Ms. Noor Kashoob, HoS- English Language Programs, introduced the rules and requirements of the tests to be conducted online. She also presented the test schedules and the cut-off scores of the placement test for English, IT and Math courses. The online registration dates were also announced. At the end of the sessions, the new students were encouraged to attend the college- level induction program in Multi-Purpose Hall which was scheduled at 11:00 am on the same day.
