Counseling and Graduate Followups Department

Counseling and Graduate Follow Ups Department

SCT provides a dedicated, full time and professional counseling service to its students, whether or not currently enrolled, to create a campus learning environment that encourages academic success and personal development, and supports the SCT mission and strategic directions. Confidential and objective assistance is available to resolve personal, career development, social and educational concerns. Assistance is offered to individual students to promote personal growth in self awareness, self confidence, self management and interpersonal skills. Counselors also provide referral services to students and assist academic staff with consultations and support in the development and presentations of relevant workshops.

Housing, Students Activities and Graduation Department

The arts and cultural activities at the SCT are diverse. There is always something going on. Whatever your taste, you will find exciting and entertaining programming throughout the year. Opportunities to perform and participate, or just to observe and be an audience member are numerous. The variety, quality and number of arts events at the SCT contribute in many ways to the vibrancy of the entire community.

Furthermore, this department extends its responsibilities to all student clubs, associations, and activities related to fine arts, music, folk dance, drama and other cultural related events as well as by issuing the Students' Newspaper.

The department achieves its goals with the following objectives:

  1. Stimulating and encouraging the development of hobbies among students.
  2. Developing and encouraging artistic talents and appreciation of arts among the students.
  3. Encouraging students to participate in the Omani, Arabic and Islamic cultural and folk activities.
  4. Encouraging creative work among students.
  5. Promoting special activities and interests among students.
  6. Promoting an open atmosphere for positive discussion.
  7. Trying to solve problems that students encounter.
  8. Opening discussion channels between the administration and the students as well as between the students and the local community.
  9. Introducing foreign staff to Omani students and to the Omani tradition and culture.
  10. Organizing field trips inside Oman and cultural trips inside and outside Oman.
  11. Checking the student allowance based on their School Region.
  12. Taking care of Student Health at the college clinic.

On-The-Job Training Department

The Ministry of Manpower has started a new programme, in consultation and collaboration with all sectors of trade and industry for young Omani nationals. It provides opportunities for their professional training to meet the needs of the various sectors of business and industry. This programme has four stages, namely, the Certificate, Diploma, the Higher Diploma and the Bachelor of Technology Degree.

Department Objectives

  • Demonstrate the broad role and importance of the technician in industry / commerce.
  • Give the student an opportunity to establish an interest in industrial/ commercial activities.
  • Provide a general work experience, so that the student can apply skills previously acquired at the College and acquire new relevant skills.
  • Provide a foundation for and prepare the student for working efficiently and productively in industrial / commercial establishments.
  • Create a two-way link between the Trade & Industry and the colleges of Ministry of Manpower so that the graduates of the colleges fulfill their needs and requirements.

The OJT gives employers the opportunity to tap into a pool of workers who are good candidates for a job but may need additional training to be qualified. The importance of OJT as a highly effective means of developing competent job skills has long been recognized.

Students receive job training skills, obtain a realistic understanding of the workplace, develop appropriate work habits and establish training and development records. Employers have access to a pool of potential employees with proven occupational competencies.

The Admission and Registration departments gives an opportunity to learn about your admission relevant to whether you have applied for an undergraduate or graduate program. It provides all the necessary information on admission requirements, enrollment procedures, regulations and programs of study, and will lead to useful links that are necessary for newly-admitted students. Counseling and Graduates Policy and Procedures

A. Counseling Provision

SCT provides a dedicated, full time and professional counseling service to its students, whether or not currently enrolled, to create a campus learning environment that encourages academic success and personal development, and supports the SCT mission and strategic directions. Confidential and objective assistance is available to resolve personal, career development, social and educational concerns. Assistance is offered to individual students to promote personal growth in self awareness, self confidence, self management and interpersonal skills. Counselors also provide referral services to students and assist academic staff with consultations and support in the development and presentations of relevant workshops

B. Personal Counseling

  1. Counselors offer assistance with personal or family problems, and dealing with physical or emotional issues. Students with special needs are interviewed by counselors to gather personal information that needs to be followed up according to a carefully designed process. Pertinent information is made available to staff who are directly involved in the daily instructional hours which the special needs students attend.
  2. Each counselor is responsible for an up to date and confidential tracking system of their students to ensure consistency and effectiveness of the counseling process.
  3. To assist them in their daily duties, counselors develop and maintain within reach of all students a wide variety of resources in the forms of brochures, magazines, self-developed material, videos and software on numerous topics.
  4. Counseling is provided in the form of outreach programs for groups targeting key issues for the student population. Potential outreach initiatives might address issues such as stress management, interpersonal communication, and life balance. Crisis counseling for individuals and groups, is offered as circumstances require.

 

B. Career counseling and guidance

  • Reference books to assist in writing CVs and covering letters, improve interviewing skills, etc;
  • Local and international continuing education information;
  • Scholarship and sponsorship opportunities;
  • Access to computer-assisted career development guidance packages;
  • career options available on completion of the student’s course; help with identifying skills;
  • how to research work and further study options;
  • how to find work and further study opportunities;
  • how to make job applications;
  • support and guidance through scholarship and sponsorships applications processes;
  • interview techniques;
  • career aptitude assessments.
  1. Career counselors, in cooperation with the Work Placement, Graduate Employment and the Alumni Services staff, assist students by giving Career Information, Advice and Guidance in developing realistic academic and career goals. SCT career counseling departments offer a career resource center which is well equipped with the latest technology and personal and career planning self-help software packages and other printed material. The career resource center maintains the most current and valuable information for SCT students. These resources include: Information on different career sectors.
  2. Career Counselors conduct individual and group advising sessions while following the Career Information, Advice, and Guidance process which:
    • utilizes and guides students through the aspects of career planning. These aspects include self-exploration, self-understanding, career exploration, academic choice, career objectives, and career/job selection. Students enrolled in their first year complete a mandatory series of workshops covering the aspects of career planning which are delivered by the career counselor.
    • offer assistance to students in searching, locating, and applying for summer jobs, work placement and graduate jobs.
    • include the coordination and supervision process of Employer events, Career Fairs and Career Awareness days through the annual cultural week.
    • encourages discussion on any career-related topics such as:
