H&S Committee Composition

This committee exists at both, University and department/center/unit levels. Assistant Dean for Administration & Financial Affairs is the chairperson for the University level committee. Chairpersons of department/center/unit H&S committees will be members of the committee by default and these are called Department/Center/unit H&S Coordinators (D&C HSC).

H&S Committee Duties and Responsibilities

 

 Responsibilities of University Level Committee Chairperson

  • Oversees the activities of the department /center H&S committees.

  • Ensures proper implementation of health and safety system in the college.

  • Reviews the implementation of health and safety policies and recommend changes.

  • Reviews reports regularly received from D&C HSCs and takes necessary action.

  • Addresses health and safety issues requiring immediate attention.

  • Ensures that emergency teams composed of trained fire wardens and first aiders are posted in all buildings.

  • Coordinates with the Risk Management Coordinator of the University.

  • Maintain a complete record of accidents in the College and submit to deans’ office for CC discussion and taking necessary improvement actions.

  • Maintain coordination with national and regional organizations concerned with health and safety.

  • Submit an annual report to College Council about the condition of health and safety in the University including recommendations for improvement.

 Responsibilities of Department/Center/unit H&S Coordinators (D&C HSC)

  • Raises awareness of good health, safety and welfare practices (including QSMs) among staff and students in the college through training, seminars and workshops.

  • Identifies the hazardous areas and safety needs of their department/center/unit and suggests improvements.

  • Ensures that the general operating guidelines for labs and workshops (that are part of QSMs) are strictly followed.

  • Checks the facilities and safety requirements such as first aid kits, emergency exit marking, firefighting system, assembly points and etc.

  • Facilitates the annual mock evacuation and fire drills.

  • Reviews/updates QSMs

  • Provides and maintains facilities, equipment, systems in working condition which are safe and without risk to the health of students, staff-members, visitors, contractors and the general public;

  • Providing and maintaining safe means of access and egress ;

  • Ensuring that arrangements are in place for safe transport, handling, storage and disposal of articles and substances that may be hazardous to health ;

  • Reports regularly to the chairman about health and safety situations and activities (including third party vendors/contractors/canteen staff and environment) of the respective department/center/unit.

  • Coordinates with the Risk Management Coordinator of the department/center.

  • Evaluates the effectiveness of implementation of all planned H&S programs and activities indicated in the department/center/unit H&S Action Plans.
