The IT Department held a research webinar in AI and Machine Learning

To strengthen the skills in advanced technologies and research of the staff, the IT-NIES Specialization organized a webinar entitled “Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning: A Research Perspective” on 17th of May 2022. The guest speaker, Dr. Aisha Banu W., a professor of BS Abdur Rahman University in India, delivered a rich and comprehensive talk about the topic.

The webinar focused mainly in the research areas in Natural Language Processing (NLP) and recommendation engines, which are example applications of AI and ML (Machine Learning). The generation of unstructured data in the form of text, voice, and images has made this research area a very relevant to today's scenario.

Examples of apps powered by NLP are:

  • Voice Assistants
  • Question and Answering Systems
  • Text Summarization algorithms
  • Chatbots
  • Sentiment Analysis
  • Machine Translation

The rapid market growth of NLP therefore, leads to the exponential growth as well on the demand of professionals with profound skills in NLP in the industry. At the end of the session, the participants were encouraged to keep abreast with this trend, explore more and conduct research related to Natural Language Processing which will benefit the university as a whole.

All the participants were welcomed by Dr. Fatima Al Shanfari, the IT-HOD while the vote of thanks was rendered by Dr. Mohammed Al Mahri, the HOS of IT Section.

This event was organized and facilitated by Dr. Chithik Raja, IT-NIES Lecturer, Mr. Jonathan Tambaoan, NIES Program Coordinator, Dr. Venkateswaran, RCC Chair, Dr. Bernard Ugalde, SDC Chair, and Ms. Melissa Juanillo, HRC Chair.

A total of 44 participants joined the webinar from the IT and Engineering Departments of UTAS-Salalah and one from Sultan Qaboos University. They gave their positive feedback on the event and received the e-certificate afterwards.
