IT Department successfully conducted the IT Festival 2022

The IT Department successfully held a spectacular celebration for this academic year, the IT Festival 2022, last March 20–29, 2022. The collaborative ideas, efforts, and valuable contributions of the department's sections, specializations, staff, IT club, and students made the annual event an added significant achievement.

As reflected in the college's strategic and operational plans, the IT Department strongly believes in the value of engaging both staff and students in curricular and extra-curricular activities. As a result, the department sets aside a day each year for students and staff to showcase their skills and talents in order to foster camaraderie and fellowship among its members. This day provides an opportunity for the department to raise awareness among its stakeholders on its various specializations through skills competitions, alumni and industry talks, innovation and entrepreneurship efforts, and recognition of outstanding students.

The continuing threat of the pandemic inspires this year’s celebration to be more ingenious. The department invited international speakers for the workshops. The activities and competitions conducted were organized and hosted by every section and specialization which actively participated also by students from UTAS in other regions. Moreover, a course projects exhibition was held. Invited alumni and representatives from industry sectors gave motivational talks, and outstanding students were recognized. All these activities are geared towards promoting learning and celebrating IT as an enabler of our society.

Day 1 was the virtual opening ceremony. It was held via MS Teams on the 20th of March, 2022, from 4:00-6:00 PM. Dr. Mohammed Rashid Al-Mamari, Dean - UTAS Salalah,gave the inaugural address. Motivational talks were given by the following invited guests, Mr. David Chan, CEO and Cofounder, eCora, UK; Ms. Marwa Al Shanfari, IT Technical Support, Dhofar University; and Ms. Murooj Al Saadi, Program Manager, Google for Startups MENA. Their success stories made the inauguration a grand success. 

The Math Section successfully conducted the activities lined up for the Day 2 held on the 21st of March, 2022, from 4:00-6:00 PM. The program prepared is in line with the Pi Day celebration. Students enthusiastically participated in the Pi Day Puzzle Competition that unveiled their prowess in solving mathematical problems. Meanwhile, the presentation of Ms. Manwa Mohammed Ali Al Mashani on tips on how to study and prepare for math tests enlightened students to overcome their fear in taking the math tests.

The next five days were for the offline activities for each specialization. The IT Section held the Mobile Programming Competition and Network Analysis and Design while the Multimedia Section organized the Photography Competition with 54 participants submitted their entries.

On its 8th day, the IT Section magnificently executed two major online events, the Python Programming Competition and Network Configuration Setup on the 27th of March, 2022, from 4:00-6:00 PM. IT students across UTAS dynamically participated the competitions.

Meanwhile, on 28th of March, the Multimedia Section made the 9th day of the IT Festival celebration exceptional from 4:00-6:00 PM. The Information Systems Program organized the IS Quiz Competition online with 29 registered participants, while the Database Program conducted the Data Modeling Quest with 32 registered participants. An overflowing response from the students across UTAS during the different events was remarkable. 

On 29th of March 2022, the closing ceremony was conducted on campus at the Multipurpose Hall (MPH). Course projects exhibition from each section and specialization was showcased. Awarding of the winners of the different events and competitions and student recognition were among the highlights. In addition, Mr. Aws Al Ammari, IT Manager, Port of Salalah gave a motivational talk. Several student businesses participated which made the day more festive. The following were ELECTRO.M, Let's Bake, Patria Cafe, Rina Cookies, M Home Sweets, and Oyya Ice Cream & Coffee. This year’s IT Festival was sponsored by Do Chocolate and flowers.

The festival was fully supported by the Dean, Dr. Mohammed Rashid Al-Mamari who gave the inaugural address, the Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs, Dr. Majdi Mohammed Said Bait Ali Sulaiman who awarded the winners and outstanding students, and the IT-HOD, Dr. Fatima Al Shanfari, who was the overall chairman of the festival. Overall, the overwhelming support from the IT Club headed by Shouq Amur Suhail Al-Mashani, various section heads, and department committees, as well as the support of the other departments and centers in the University made this year’s festival a momentous one.
