ABOUT THE ELC
The English Language Centre prides itself in being the most diverse department at UTAS-Salalah. Academic and support staff come from 13 countries all over the world, bringing with them a wide range of cultural and educational backgrounds. The Head of the English Language Centre, the Head of Section for Curriculum and Teaching Methods, and the Head of Section for English Language Programs are responsible for the operation of the ELC as outlined in the College By laws.
Mission
Committed at developing students' linguistic proficiency, the ELC strives to promote active learning and the use of English language by providing the learners with meaningful extensive practice in grammar, listening, writing, reading, and speaking skills needed in various academic situations and the labour market. Apart from that, the ELC aims at enabling students to attain an advanced level competency in critical thinking, communication, and study skills, which will help them successfully advance towards educational, technical, and personal goals that ultimately lead to their full participation in the national development of Oman.
Admission and Progression
All registered students are eligible to enter the General Foundation Program. Their entry level depends on their linguistic ability. The in-house Placement Test (PT) determines the English language level of each student and his/her placement is decided accordingly. This means that not all students are required to take the four levels. Some may progress through the Program much faster than others depending on the PT results.
Exemption
Students can be exempted from the PT then admitted to the specialization programs, provided that they produce evidences of an achievement of Level Exit Exam at Level 4 or a proficiency in International Accredited Exams (i.e. Academic IELTS Band for 4.5 and 5.0 for Btech) and they meet the requirements of IT & Math Foundation Programs.
